jotokun over at Gamefaqs posted these great comparison shots from Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 54. Really shows what a great job they are doing on the XBLA upgrade.

It's certainly noticeable. However the painting is different in the N64 and XBLA version of Carrington villa.

I agree I think the fresh graphics whith new paint is going to be the real big thing. Maybe they will make the blood even more realistic that would be cool.

Meh, If you look closely you can tell they just took the source textures, beefed them up into a higher rez and updated the models a tiny bit (again probably using source models which are usually higher quality then what is actually rendered) It's really noticeable with the jagged edge on the Callisto NTG in the bottom images, I've played Perfect Dark on my emulator with higher resolution then these screens assuming its actually true 1080p that the 360 is rendering, and It looks very very close, the only improvement I can see is on that characters face, and her polygon count over all (which btw can easily be done with a pre-made model its called the "Smooth" option in MayaXSI).
It seriously looks like they're just improving the source material slightly with higher resolutions... I'd like to maybe see some normal mapping on the weapons and models at least (that however would need a super high polygon source model for the normal map, which would require the gun to be completely remodeled, and in my opinion if I was the art director to this game I would have just had the gun(CMP150) modeled to detail after the gun it was modeled back in 2000 the Steyr TMP maybe add some pipes...things in the way, some interactivity with items (real wold physics)... But then again I guess that kind of development would require a bigger team(budget)... would have been awesome If Rare was behind this and decided to do a real faithful remake of the original game. Maybe the game is super early, no release date has been announced after all... And for all of us expecting the same quality as the ill fated goldeneye remake rare "completed" which is awesome, the right bumper to switch instantly to regular graphics option is so cool, and the multiplayer option for "Classic" with the 4 screens on all players on X-box live, etc. etc. are forgetting something, That was Rare doing it, Rare Isn't on this project. I don't wana be the bad guy or anything, I love the fact that they're doing this... especially with the multilpayer mode now finally over the internet, I used to always tell my friends "Man, If perfect dark had multiplayer online I'd still be playing to this day, And Id tell you its the best game ever" It's a nice attempt no doubt, I'm just hoping for them to at least add some of their own creativity to this aged game and revive it a little, again with some added things to the environment like pipes and vents, gratings modeled out in place that they make sense..maybe those parts can be destructible from gun fire and explosions, for example... Lets take a look at the Perfect Dark map Grid, for those of you who remember... there's that section of the map its a long lobby with a elevator at the end of it with the pillars all around it, well that was clearly influenced from the Matrix lobby scene, which in a interview with the team they admitted to having references from movies like the matrix. Remember how the Pillars broke apart, chipped and crumbled when hit with gunfire? ...we all know the 360 can do that, lets see it? Even if we just get a slightly touched up version of PD with 1080p, 60fps and a online mode I'll be a freaking happy camper, but the inner hardcore perfect dark and rare fan really wants a another true faithful outing to the real joanna dark we all fell inlove with in 2000, maybe I'll just have to wait for Perfect Dark 2.... -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() |

They did a good work. I would have liked the same thing for Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

Meh, If you look closely you can tell they just took the source textures, beefed them up into a higher rez and updated the models a tiny bit Really!? Meh? Wow tough crowd! Sorry but I want it to still look like Perfect Dark. Upgrading the textures from the source IS WHAT I WANT! What would you have them do? All new textures that are not faithful? QUOTE I've played Perfect Dark on my emulator with higher resolution then these screens assuming its actually true 1080p that the 360 is rendering, and It looks very very close Me too, quite often in fact. And I disagree, the textures are VASTLY superior in these screens. Look at the hardwood floor. When playing emulated it looks great, no doubt. But the textures only look good from a distance. This is a very nice upgrade from playing PD emulated. Here is a screen from PD running at a nice high resolution - ![]() Look at the textures, still low resolution and blurry! Look at the GUN! Very significant upgrade! Another emulated at higher resolution :- ![]() Look at the textures! Here are some side-by-sides :- ![]() Again, look at the gun. The XBLA textures are too detailed to get a good look at in this small image, but the emulated N64 version still shows them in as much detail as they offer, and still blurry. QUOTE It seriously looks like they're just improving the source material slightly with higher resolutions... I'd like to maybe see some normal mapping on the weapons and models at least (that however would need a super high polygon source model for the normal map, which would require the gun to be completely remodeled, and in my opinion if I was the art director to this game I would have just had the gun(CMP150) modeled to detail after the gun it was modeled back in 2000 I'm pretty sure that is exactly what has been done! Not sure about normal mapping, and that would be nice. But the CMP150 has been completely remodelled just like you wanted. How did you miss that! ![]() QUOTE Maybe the game is super early, no release date has been announced after all... And for all of us expecting the same quality as the ill fated goldeneye remake Looking at those Goldeneye shots in comparrison to these, I think the quality is pretty close myself. And this is obviously pretty early since only one shot even shows an enemy! While I also wish Rare was handling this, I think 4J are doing a great job from what we have seen. And the release date is "winter", giving them 6 months to improve the graphics and get the net code working right. QUOTE It's a nice attempt no doubt, I'm just hoping for them to at least add some of their own creativity to this aged game Oh god no! That's the last thing I want! I want it to be faithful, I don't want them messing with anything above and beyond making it look like the same game but a lot nicer. And that's what it looks like we are getting. Maybe if it was the original team working on it then I'd be OK with some "creativity" but since it isn't and since many of them have moved on. Just make it look as nice as possible WITHOUT making it look different at all. Some nice normal mapping and bump mapping would be great, but let's not expect too much from a XBLA game. It already looks to me like it is getting a much better treatment than any other XBLA classic update QUOTE Even if we just get a slightly touched up version of PD with 1080p, 60fps and a online mode I'll be a freaking happy camper, but the inner hardcore perfect dark and rare fan really wants a another true faithful outing to the real joanna dark we all fell inlove with in 2000, maybe I'll just have to wait for Perfect Dark 2.... Hear, hear! Perfect Dark 2 is the dream. And if it isn't already in production, hopefully the sales of this will get it approved. |

I can not wait for this game to hit XBLA. I never had gotten to finish Perfect Dark as my copy was stolen from me by somebody. Pitiful eh? The game is looking great none the less, updated textures can never hurt, it will still look, feel, and be Perfect Dark.
As well, It is nice to see some different poster's around these days, welcome (back) -------------------- |

Just for the, the graphics where completely re done for both Banjo and Tooie just like what they plan to do for PD. Cannot wait, I never got to play the original game on the n64, played the xbox 360 which I enjoyed to an extent.

The N64 is completely superior to the 360 one in every respect; the 360 one was kind of dissapointing, to be honest. But I'm glad this is coming out

PDZ's online modes were a 100 times better than the original PD's! -------------------- "Now we must address a problem which at some time or another has been a source of distress for us all. I refer to the gradual accumulation of gas in the abdomen which induces an ever-increasing discomfort. Eventually, and despite alterations of posture and ever more intense muscular effort, a powerful impulse occurs destroying all restraint, so that a flatulence ensues, often with a trombone-like sonority."

PDZ's online modes were a 100 times better than the original PD's! I vehemently disagree. Regardless, my problem isn't with the "online modes"...it's with the game mechanics and game style. PDz is too cartoony, and the game mechanics are broken. Perfect Dark N64 far excels and exceeds Zero. I just want to forget about Zero and wait for PD2 |
